Kaal Bhairav Temple, Varanasi

The Kalbhairav Temple holds a special place in the spiritual heart of Varanasi. Dedicated to Lord Shiva in his fierce manifestation as Kal Bhairav, the temple symbolizes divine protection and justice. Kal Bhairav is regarded as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi, and it is believed that no one can stay in the holy city without his permission.
According to local tradition, devotees must first seek blessings at the Kal Bhairav Temple before visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. This ancient custom reflects the belief that Kal Bhairav grants access to Lord Shiva and safeguards the spiritual sanctity of the city.
The current structure of the temple is said to have been built in the 18th century by the Maratha queen, Rani Ahilyabai Holkar—who is also credited with restoring many sacred temples across India. Over time, the temple has undergone several renovations, yet it retains its powerful aura and continues to be a revered site of worship.
One of the unique aspects of this temple is the offering of alcohol, particularly whisky, to the deity—a rare ritual in Hindu worship that symbolizes Kal Bhairav’s unconventional and fearsome nature. Devotees often purchase a small bottle from nearby shops and present it at the shrine as part of their prayer.
Thousands of pilgrims visit the temple daily, especially on Sundays and during the Kalashtami festival, when the atmosphere becomes deeply spiritual and charged with devotion.

Kal Bhairav is believed to be particularly fond of the color black. Devotees offer black cloth as a symbol of seeking protection and freedom from negative energies.
Lamps lit with mustard oil are a common offering in the temple. Lighting these lamps symbolizes the removal of darkness and fear.
Kal Bhairav is especially offered marigold flowers. Garlands made of marigold represent devotion and reverence.
During worship, devotees burn incense sticks and camphor while performing aarti. This purifies the atmosphere and invokes divine energy.
The sacred ash available at the temple is considered highly powerful. Devotees apply it on their foreheads as a protective blessing against evil forces.
Some devotees also offer coconuts, sweets, and other traditional items as part of their ritual offerings to the deity.
